What is Hermit’s Castle?

You will most likely have heard of the North Coast 500 and you may even have heard of Achmelvich. Achmelvich is one of the best beaches in Scotland and definitely one of the best beaches on the North Coast 500. Even if you do know of, or have been to Achmelvich Beach, there is still a strong chance you haven’t heard of Hermit’s Castle. So what is it?


The Smallest Castle in Europe

Hermit’s Castle is the smallest castle in Europe. In fact it may be the smallest castle in the world. Measuring less than 10m squared in area, the castle was built in the 1950s. It is to the Western headland of Achmelvich a map can be seen below of how to get there.

Getting here from NC500 Pods

We will direct you to the castle using a start point of North Coast 500 Pods in Achmelvich.

  1. Step out of NC500 Pods and turn left
  2. Follow the road all the way to Shore Caravan Site
  3. Continue to walk through shore caravan site
  4. Aim for the fence to the right past the house at Shore Caravan Site
  5. Go through the gate on the fence
  6. Walk past the small ruin beside Shore Caravan Site
  7. Head up towards your left
  8. You should now see the Hermit’s Castle down to your left
  9. It blends in to the rocks so keep your eyes peeled

Who Built Hermit’s Castle?

Hermit’s Castle was built by an English Architect called David Scott. He was fed up of people so decided to get away from everyone and build a castle beside a beautiful beach in the Scottish Highlands. Relatable? I really think so.
